Cast: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Paul Dano and Dylan Minnette.

Director: Denis Villeneuve

This film is haunting, gruelling and an absolute must see for those who enjoy thrillers with endless twists and turns.

The film centres around the investigation of the abduction of two young girls. Although Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) is doing everything possible to find the children, the clock is ticking and one desperate father, Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman), takes matters into his own hands.

The casting of this film is brilliant. Hugh Jackman is entirely convincing as a staunchly religious survivalist who is willing to go to extreme measures, outside his moral code, to find his daughter. Jake Gyllenhaal is excellent as a twitchy and sharp detective who feels personally responsible for the girls’ lives and Paul Dano is captivating as young intellectually disabled man who becomes the investigation’s prime suspect.

The plot of this film is complex and enthralling. There are so many twists and clues hidden throughout the film that I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to ruin the ending. Suffice to say that this is definitely one film that cannot be categorised as predictable.

I highly recommend Prisoners to anyone who is in the mood for two and a half hours of gripping drama. Even though this film can be emotionally draining at times, the end is well worth it!

I would give this film 4/5.
